What do we mean by Restrictive Eating?

Missing meals on purpose, controlling how much you are eating or the type of food or groups of food you eat, or even enjoying the feeling of being hungry are some of the many indicators/signals of a potential restrictive eating disorder. Restrictive eating or Restrictive Food Intake Disorder is a term that is used for people who are often missing out on referral to a clinical practitioner since they largely appear as healthy from their overall BMI and lack of outward manifestation of any psychiatric symptoms.

Restrictive eating can be incredibly subtle and consequently difficult to diagnose. Sufferers will often try to mask their behaviour and therefore fall through the gaps in the current medical treatment.

Often starting out in adolescence, restrictive eating is more than just a phase or fad diet. It has psychological roots which if not addressed, can become a relentless cycle of learned behaviour that carries on into adulthood.
